Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis, also known as BV, is the most common type of bacterial vaginal infection in Europe and leads to symptoms similar to those of a vaginal mycosis, such as vaginal discharge. The infection is not dangerous and often disappears by itself, but many women choose to treat it with medication. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by a bacterial imbalance in your vagina and can be easily and safely treated with our medicines.

Bacterial vaginosis is a common infection that affects many women at some point in their lives. It occurs when the bacterial balance in your vagina changes, which can be caused by a number of factors. The vagina has a naturally acidic pH and the normal balance of various types of harmless bacteria is quite sensitive, which is why bacterial vaginosis is very common.

The infection is not dangerous and some women even have it without realizing it because they may not have any noticeable symptoms. Over time, the infection disappears by itself, but many women experience symptoms and therefore decide to treat the infection with medication. Symptoms may include a white or grayish discharge, which is usually thin and watery and often smells bad. Unlike candidiasis or other infections, bacterial vaginosis does not usually cause itching, pain or soreness in the vagina.

Bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted infection, as men do not get it and therefore it cannot be transmitted. However, sex, especially with multiple partners, can trigger the infection, as this can lead to a disturbance of the bacterial balance in your vagina. It is important to practice safe sex because bacterial vaginosis can make you more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, chlamydia and herpes.

The disease is largely harmless and many women do not even notice it before it eventually disappears on its own. However, it is best to seek medical advice if your vaginal health deteriorates, as bacterial vaginosis can cause pelvic inflammatory disease if left untreated. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) causes pain in the pelvic area, bleeding and swelling in the genital tract. If the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis worsen, you may need treatment for PID.

There is no exact cause for bacterial vaginosis. Instead, it can be caused by a number of factors. One of the main causes is sexual intercourse, especially intercourse with different partners. This does not mean that it is sexually transmitted, but simply that intercourse can change the bacterial balance in the vagina.

Another trigger can be any foreign body placed in the vagina, including sex toys, intrauterine devices and tampons. Smoking has also been found to interfere with the natural bacterial balance.

Personal hygiene and cleaning can also contribute greatly to bacterial vaginosis. To prevent the development of bacterial vaginosis, women should wipe carefully from front to back when wiping after going to the toilet, wear light fabrics such as cotton and change their underwear regularly. On the other hand, "excessive washing" can also cause bacterial vaginosis. If you use products that are strong or heavily perfumed to clean the vagina, also known as vaginal showers, this may be the trigger. The vagina cleans itself naturally, so water and a little mild soap are enough to achieve good vaginal health.

Bacterial vaginosis can easily be treated with a short antibiotic treatment, in particular with metronidazole, which is safely and discreetly available from RxMeds. You can also treat bacterial vaginosis with a single-dose antibiotic or a gel. However, a short drug treatment is preferred as there are fewer side effects and it is easier to use than the gel.

Once the infection has subsided, you can take a number of measures to prevent bacterial vaginosis from recurring. Avoid synthetic materials, either clothing fabrics or detergents. Try to wear loose cotton clothing and use mild detergents and natural products to wash your body and vagina. Do not clean your vagina excessively to avoid bacterial vaginosis. Ensure good hygiene and always have protected intercourse..
